Ham Pot Pie

Well, we've all heard of chicken, turkey, or beef pot pie. But, have you ever heard of Ham Pot Pie? I happened across a recipe for ham pot pie and thought I would give it a try. I happened to have leftover ham from Christmas, which I had frozen and needed to use it up. I thought this recipe would give new life to that frozen ham so I was excited to get to work. My husband and daughter were skeptical. My husband kept saying that ham just didn't go into a pot pie. He insisted that it wouldn't work. I knew I had to win them over, so I decided to go with Ina Garten's biscuit topping instead of the pie crust the recipe called for. How can anyone resist perfectly golden buttery biscuits sitting atop a creamy filling?
Ham Filling for the Pot Pie:
1 cup potato, diced
1 cup onion, diced
1 cup celery, diced
1 cup carrot, diced
1/3 cup melted margarine
1/2 cup a/p flour
2 cups chicken broth
1 cup half and half
1 teaspoon salt
dash or two of pepper
4 cups of ham, cooked and chopped

Preheat oven to 375°F. Saute onion, celery, carrots and potatoes in butter for 10 minutes.Add flour to sauteed mixture, stirring well. Cook one minute stirring constantly. Combine broth and half and half. Gradually stir into vegetable mixture. Cook over medium heat stirring constantly until thickened and bubbly. Stir in salt and pepper; add ham and stir well. Pour into shallow 2 quart casserole dish and top with biscuits. Bake 30-40 minutes until biscuits are cooked through and golden.
I topped my ham pot pie with Ina's biscuit recipe from Chicken Stew with Biscuits. It was just the right touch and her biscuits were delicious.

Recipe for Biscuits - adapted from Ina Garten/Food Network
2 cups flour
1 tablespoon baking powder
1 teaspoon kosher salt
1 teaspoon sugar
1/4 pound (1 stick) cold unsalted butter, diced
3/4 cup half-and-half
1/2 cup chopped fresh parsley
1 egg mixed with 1 tablespoon water, for egg wash (I brushed my biscuits with cream, not egg wash and it turned out great)

Combine the flour, baking powder, salt, and sugar in the bowl of an electric mixer fitted with the paddle attachment. Add the butter and mix on low speed until the butter is the size of peas. Add the half-and-half and combine on low speed. Mix in the parsley. Dump the dough out on a well-floured board and, with a rolling pin, roll out to 3/8-inch thick. Cut out twelve circles with a 2 1/2-inch round cutter. (I didn't roll the dough out. I simply formed 12 biscuits by hand and laid them on top the pie).

Notes/Results: The biscuits really made this dish. The tops of the biscuits had the lightest crispness and the inside of the biscuit was fluffy and wonderful. I loved the little specks of parsley flakes going throughout the biscuits. The creamy filling had bubbled up over top the biscuits and was so comforting. I think it was a great way to use up frozen ham. My daughter didn't care for it, but she is extremely picky. My husband couldn't get past the fact that it was a ham pot pie, but he ate his fair share.

What do you think? Do you think you'd give a ham pot pie a try? Or, do you think pot pies should be saved for chicken, turkey and beef only?

  1. I definitely think "chicken" when it comes to pot pie, but I agree that no one can resist pie (no matter what filling) when there are golden biscuits sitting on top!

  4. Would never have thought of it, but with Ina's biscuit topping, I'll bet it was delicious. I've never made a lobster pot pie, but bet that would be delicous with Ina's biscuits, too. In fact, I'll bet Ina's biscuits by themselves would be great. Can you tell I'm having a carb moment here?

  24. I'd definitely try it, just knock the salt down a bit from any chix pot pie recipe.

Men are gullible. Just change the name to Biscuit Topped Ham Casserole or Ham Biscuit ala King or something and we'll never tell you that Ham Pot Pie won't work;)

Crap. I just spilled a man secret.

  27. I think ham pot pie sounds wonderful--sometimes the basic chicken just gets boring. I've actually use shrimp and crab to make a seafood potpie and it got rave reviews!

  29. This lookeed awesome. I was trying to come up with a ham pot pie recipe, and my wife said there was no such thing. I found this, made it for dinner, and all kids, including the picky one, LOVED it!

I scored points on multiple fronts. Made a great meal, and won a bet with my wife who rarely admits she's wrong. Tonight she even said I'm SORRY! Wow, what a winner. MaineChef

  30. Found your site while looking for a Ham Pot Pie Recipe. My mother made one when we little that is similar to yours. It also had frozen peas and sliced boiled eggs and a rolled out biscuit dough crust. Yours was the closest to her filling that I could find on the web. Thanks for posting it.

  31. Well, I was searching the net *specifically* for a ham pot pie because I tho't it sounded great! I found 2 that sound good but yours is definitely the less work intensive. :) I don't like to make pie crusts so your biscuit alternative sounds like just the ticket! -- Sis --

  32. Thats not pot pie... HAM potpie is a Pa Dutch thing and its ham broth with potatos and ham, home made noodles and commonly served with raw diced onion and yellow mustard. That is like chicken and dumplings but with ham.

  34. Mine is in the oven as we speak and it smells delicious. I'm sure it will be lovely. I love making pot pies and I am using left over ham from Easter. I also added a cup of frozen peas and a cup of frozen corn, and cut the ham down to 2 cups. Thanks for the recipe!

  38. I am currently baking this now! I followed your recipe except for 2 alterations. My hubs is allergic to onion, but can do the powder. So I used onion powder instead. And I was in a time crunch so I used pre-made biscuits, but I glazed thrm in a mixture of butter, garlic, onion powder and Italian seasonings. It's a go to butter sauce for homemade garlic bread cheese balls. I'm excited to taste this! Thanks for the idea!
